When I look at this image, I see more than two beautiful girls surrounded by books.

I see legacy.

I see two young Black girls surrounded by stories that reflect them - stories that affirm them, stories that remind them they belong in the narrative.

As a psychologist who works with adults, I’ve seen how many insecurities begin in childhood - in the words children hear, and the ones they don’t. So much of adulthood is spent rewriting scripts that were never consciously chosen.

That is why representation and history matter. It is not cosmetic. It is developmental.

When Black children see brilliance, courage, imagination, and leadership reflected back at them, their brains encode possibility. And when those stories are paired with affirmations

“I am smart.”

“My voice matters.”

“I belong.”

- we are not just building confidence. We are building identity.

Black History Month reminds us that our children are not just inheritors of history - they are creators of it. If we give children powerful language early, they won’t have to unlearn silence later.

What children hear repeatedly becomes what they believe, and what they believe becomes how they show up in the world.

This month, and every month, we affirm:

You are brilliant.

You are worthy.

You are limitless.

Let’s raise children who speak power - so they can see change.
